Questions that will help determine the right strapping tool

May 29, 2019
  • Plastic or Steel strap?
  • What size and type of strap is being used ?
  • What type of load are you strapping? (Boxes, steel pipe, wood sheets, palettes etc.) ?
  • What is the load weight & dimensions ?
  • What is the load characteristics? i.e.: Does the load have any sharp edges?
  • What is the number of loads being strapped per day?
  • How many straps are applied to the load?
  • What are the environmental conditions where the product is being strapped?
  • What temperature is the load exposed too?

Determining Break Strength

Verify if the appropriate strap is being used for your application.

(Load Weight x 1.5) / No. of straps to be applied = Tensile of the strap

Ex: Maximum pallet weight = 1100 lbs to be held by 3 straps
(1100 x 1.5) / 3 = 550 lbs strap capacity

The recommended strapping tools would be for approx. 600 lbs “Break Load Strength”.

Determining Tension Requirements

Ex. Polyester Strap (15.5mm x 0.76mm thick)
Break Strength specified in Kg

Constant = 0.4
Break strength listed for this strap = 600 kg

Tension Requirement : 600 kg x 0.4 = 240 kg

Ex. Steel strap (19mm x 0.6mm thick)
Break Strength specified N/mm2

Strap break strength = 850 N/mm2
Constant = 0.4
Newton's / 9.85 = Kg.

Average Break Load: 19 x 0.6 x 850 = 9,690 (average break load)
9,690 x 0.4 = 3876 Newton's
Tension Requirement: 3,876 x 9.85 = 394 kg
